Historian Tom Holland explores how a new religion - Islam - emerged from the seedbed of the ancient world, and asks what we really know for certain about the rise of Islam. An Islamic History of Europe UK Channel 4 has engaged in a direct war against Islam by airing a documentary which distorts the reality of the glorious Faith. Over 1000 complaints have been made to the channel and another 200 to the UK media regulator Ofcom over a documentary about the origins of Islam. By way of avoiding an investigation into the matter, an Ofcom spokesman has said, "We will assess them and if we believe there has been a possible breach of the broadcasting code, we would hold an investigation, but no decision to that effect has been taken." Islam: The Untold Story, presented by Tom Holland, claims there is little written contemporary evidence about the origin of Islam and the life of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). As another politically-motivated attempt by followers of the English Defence League (EDL) to misrepresent the realities of Islam, the production is a mere distortion of history presented by someone with no background of religious knowledge. Holland's works mostly comprise vampire and adventure stories, and his non-fiction books are nothing related to religious issues or Islam. Islamic Center of Greater Toledo reveals damage from arson
On Thursday, members of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo gave the media a look at the damage caused by an intentional fire set at the facility on Sunday. Members, of the Islamic Center, were allowed back into their place of worship for the first time on Wednesday. Once power was restored to the building, they learned that much more had been lost than they had anticipated. "Every single room is damaged. Every room is out of commission," President of the Islamic Center Dr. Mahjabeen Islam said. Though no official damage estimate has been given, Islam believes that "most of the material is not salvageable." In the mosque's main prayer room, where is fire is believed to have been set, a large portion of the carpet is torched. "There is a smell of gasoline," Islam described. Smoke and water damage also covers the walls, floors and ceiling tiles of many other rooms in the facility. Manal Elshiekh, a 2nd grade teacher at the Islamic Center, said almost everything in her classroom "was destroyed". "Everything, even the materials we did with our own hands, the kids artwork, and materials got destroyed," Elshiekh said as she fought back tears. Islam says that in the week since the fire, members have received an outpouring of support from people in both the Islamic and non-Islamic Communities. Join Tim (Yusuf) Chambers as he explores the life of one of Britian's most outstanding gentlemen - Henry William Abdullah Quilliam. Abdullah Quilliam open the first Islamic Centre in 1889 in the heart of Liverpool. Abdullah Quilliam was born in Liverpool to a wealthy Manx family in 1856. His father, Robert Quilliam, was a watch manufacturer. William was educated at the Liverpool Institute and King William's College on the Isle of Man. He began work as a solicitor in 1878, building a successful legal practice in Liverpool. Quilliam was brought up a Methodist but converted to Islam after visiting Morocco to recover from an illness at the age of 17. Returning to Liverpool, he began to promote Islam in Britain as Abdullah Quilliam. He had earlier learned about Islam while visiting southern France in 1882 and crossing over to Algeria and Tunisia. Quilliam established the Liverpool Muslim Institute at 8 Brougham Terrace, West Derby Road, Liverpool in 1889, opening on Christmas Day. This was England's first mosque, accommodating around a hundred Muslims, This was followed by a Muslim college, headed by Haschem Wilde and Nasrullah Warren, which offered courses for both Muslims and non-Muslims. A weekly Debating and Literary Society within the college attracted non-Muslims. Quilliam influenced the paths of other converts, including his mother Harriet, his sons, and scientists and intellectuals and his example lead to the conversion of over 150 Englishmen to Islam.
